Vickie Turman Woods was born on August 5, 1969, the fifth of six children born to Charlie Ben and Cleo Turman. She entered the world as one half of the dynamic twin duo known as Vickie and Nita.
Vickie lived her life quietly, finding joy in her family and the people she loved. She appreciated peace and carried that spirit with her always. In a way that reflected how she lived, Vickie departed this life peacefully on April 9, 2026.
Vickie grew up in Lansing, Michigan, and was raised at Galilee Baptist Church, where she accepted Christ at a young age. She served faithfully in the choir and on the usher board. She attended Everett High School, where she formed lasting friendships. Those who encountered her were quickly met with warmth, kindness, and a genuine smile. Vickie truly never met a stranger.
Following high school, she followed in her mother’s footsteps and attended Craig’s College of Beauty, earning her cosmetology license. She went on to work at Ida’s Hairshop, where she served many in the community. In the early ’90s, if it was Easter Sunday and you were rocking a flawless French roll, there’s a good chance Vickie had something to do with it.
Shortly after high school, she married her high school sweetheart, Maurice Woods. To this union, three sons were born: Darice, Donovan, and Dominique Woods.
While raising her boys, Vickie felt a pull toward a new path. She began working at Save-A-Lot, and when the store closed, she continued her journey with Kroger. She made everyday shopping a little brighter with her warm smile and helpful spirit. She faithfully served her community until declining health led to her retirement. One of the hardest parts of stepping away was missing her daily interactions with the people she cared about so much. Many customers have since reached out to share their memories—a true testament to the life she lived. Vickie loved people, and they loved her right back.
As her health declined, Vickie faced each day with courage. She kept her spirits lifted by spending time with family and friends. She didn’t let much keep her down for long. No matter the circumstance, Vickie wore her beautiful smile (and her Wet n Wild 521 lipstick), and somehow, things felt a little more right because of it.
Vickie was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie Ben and Cleo Turman; her sister, Cynthia Turman-Knox; her brother, Julius Turman; and her niece, Clenita Turman.
She leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Darice, Donovan (Tiara), and Dominique Woods; her siblings, Charlie (Dorothye) Turman, Kenneth Turman, and Venita Turman; her grandchildren, Iyanna, Josiah, Amaya, Dominique Jr., Aubriella, and Adrienne Woods; two special nieces, Brandye (Bryant) Alexander and Falynn (Albert) Morris; a special cousin, Rennie Trotter; special friends, Gloria Hall, Emerlisa Jones, and Shiwanna Frazier; along with a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Though her light has dimmed on this earth, she will never be forgotten. Her memory will live on in all who knew and loved her. And if you ever find yourself at Kroger on MLK and Holmes, take a moment to smile, just like Vickie would, and remember her smiling back.
In her own quiet and faithful way, Vickie fought the good fight, finished her course, and kept the faith. — 2 Timothy 4:7
