On Sunday, November 1, 2009, at age 77, Vernetta D. Mathious was surrounded by family when the Lord sent His angels to escort her soul unto Himself.
A beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Mrs. Vernetta Drusilla McNichols was born March 12, 1932 in Paducah, Kentucky to Savernie and Mildred (Porter) McNichols. She moved to Saginaw in 1943 and was employed by Buena Vista Township for 25 years. Known for her cheerful personality, Vernetta loved and cherished her family, enjoyed knitting and playing solitaire. She was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Cordelia Chapter #48 O.E.S. - Amaranth Blue Star Court #5, Lily of the Valley Court #2 Heroines of Jericho, Morning Glory Council #3 Lady Knights Council and Oasis Court #2 Daughters of Sphinx and The Saginaw County Foster Grandparent Association.
She is survived by five daughters, Brenda Bell of Saginaw, Michigan, Mildred (Johnny) Bradshaw of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mary (Richard) Crosby of Saginaw, Michigan, Della (Stephen) Simmons of Detroit, Michigan, Geraldine (Ernest) Green of Saginaw, Michigan; one son Grover (Sherrie) Mathious of Flint, Michigan; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Johnny (Ruben) Mathias; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mrs. Mathious was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard Allen Mathious, Sr., a brother, James McNichols, a son, Richard Allen Mathious, Jr., and two grandsons, William Bradshaw and Larry Mathious.
