Thelma Walker

With hearts filled with both sorrow and gratitude, we celebrate the life of Thelma Ferguson Walker, who peacefully entered the presence of her Lord on Thursday, May 28, 2026, in Lansing, Michigan, at the age of 72.

Born on May 6, 1954, in Lansing, Michigan, to the late John Ferguson Jr. and Sarah Robinson Ferguson, Thelma was known for her joyful spirit, radiant smile, and infectious laughter. She delighted in spending time with her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends, creating cherished memories through laughter, conversation, and the simple joy of being together.

The foundation of Thelma's life was her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. At an early age, she was baptized at Union Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Charles Patterson, beginning a lifelong walk with God that shaped her character, guided her decisions, and inspired her service to others.

After graduating from J.W. Sexton High School in 1972, Thelma attended Michigan State University, earning a degree in Urban and Metropolitan Studies in 1977. During those years, she actively participated in Campus Crusade for Christ, served as a counselor at Youth Haven Ranch, and taught Sunday School. Her desire to deepen her faith later led her to continue her studies at Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio.

In 1982, she married Christopher L. Walker in Dayton, Ohio. Five years later, the couple returned to Lansing, where Thelma built a life centered on faith, family, and service. Whether through Christian education, teaching children, encouraging others in their faith, praying faithfully for family and friends, or sharing the Gospel wherever she could, Thelma embraced every opportunity to minister to others. She believed deeply in the transformative power of God’s love and made it her life’s mission to encourage, uplift, and point others toward Christ.

Above every accomplishment, Thelma treasured her family. She celebrated every opportunity to gather with loved ones, offering wisdom, laughter, and unwavering support. Her presence brought comfort, her prayers brought strength, and her joyful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, John Ferguson Jr. and Sarah Robinson Ferguson; her brothers, Charlie Bufford Sr., C. James Barlow, and S.T. Robinson Jr.; her sisters, Ophia Smith and Lille Robinson Pruitt; her niece, Carolyn Smith Watts; and her nephew, Steven Robinson.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her devoted husband, Christopher L. Walker; her beloved son, Joshua Walker; her treasured granddaughter, Emori Walker; her sisters, Velma Ferguson and Lucille Simpson; her sisters-in-law, Mary (Charlie) Bufford and Lynn (Charles) Platt; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were forever enriched by her love, prayers, and faithful example.

Thelma's legacy is one of steadfast faith, selfless service, and unconditional love. She leaves behind countless memories of kindness, encouragement, and laughter, along with the enduring example of a life fully devoted to God and deeply committed to family. Though she will be greatly missed, those who knew and loved her find comfort in knowing she is now at peace in the presence of her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.
