Ms. Shirley Jean Sims, age 79, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 16, 2026, in Lansing, Michigan.
Born on November 3, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, to Lily Mae and Robert Roberson, Shirley was the second oldest of eleven children. From an early age, she embraced the importance of family, becoming a source of strength, comfort, and unwavering love to those around her. Although she never married, her life was full of rich relationships, and she devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family. She was an oasis for those she loved-a steady presence whose wisdom, kindness, honesty, and gentle spirit provided peace and encouragement through every season of life.
Shirley received her early education in Chicago and later earned an Associate Degree from Harold Washington College. She began her career at Burny Brothers Bakery, where she developed a strong work ethic that would remain with her throughout her life. She later worked in an attorney's office before relocating to Lansing, Michigan, where she continued her career with the Michigan Democratic Party, faithfully serving until her retirement. She was respected for her dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence.
Shirley found joy in life's simple pleasures. She and her beloved sister, Doris, faithfully enjoyed weekly trips to the movies-special outings they affectionately called their "Sister Dates." Those treasured times together were filled with laughter, conversation, and the special bond only sisters share. Shirley loved to laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor that brought joy to those around her.
An avid reader with an incredible love for books, Shirley is believed to have read more than 2,000 books throughout her lifetime. Through every story, she expanded her mind and nurtured her love of learning. Though naturally introverted, she also enjoyed traveling and experiencing new places, creating memories she treasured for years to come.
One of Shirley's greatest joys was spending time with her family. Their weekly family dinners became a cherished tradition, filled with conversation, laughter, and love. She understood that life's greatest blessings are often found around the family table, and she treasured every opportunity to gather with those she loved.
Those who knew Shirley also knew she would always tell the truth. She was lovingly known for saying, "Don't ask me a question if you don't want the truth." It was a reflection of her honesty, straightforward nature, and the integrity with which she lived her life.
One of the defining characteristics of Shirley's life was her quiet but unwavering faith. She knew in whom she had believed and rested confidently in the promises of God. Shirley lived with the blessed assurance that when she closed her eyes on this side of eternity, she would open them in the presence of her Heavenly Father. That hope sustained her throughout her life and now brings comfort to all who mourn her passing.
Shirley leaves behind a legacy of faithfulness, kindness, wisdom, and unconditional love. She will be remembered for the peace she brought into every room, the laughter she shared, the stories she loved, her unwavering devotion to family, and the steadfast faith that guided her life. Though quiet by nature, her influence was profound, and her memory will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know and love her.
Shirley was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Lily Mae and Robert Roberson; her sisters, Betty, Christine, and Michelle; and her brothers, Eddie, Gabe, Tommy, and Bobby.
She leaves to cherish her memory her loving sister, Doris Sims; her devoted brother, Michael Sims; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love and faithful presence.
Though our hearts grieve her absence, we rejoice in the gift of her life and in the assurance that she is at peace in the presence of the Lord. Her legacy will live on through every family gathering, every "Sister Date," every shared laugh, every good book, and every act of love inspired by the example she set.
