Russell James Smith was born on March 22, 1935, in Union Springs, Alabama, to L.C. Smith and Australia Smith, who preceded him in death.
Russell had an early education by leaving school and joining the workforce. He went to work at Levall Shoe Repair at an early age to help his family. He worked at Grey Iron for many years. He was also a singer in a spiritual quartet that traveled.
Russell was also very family-oriented. He was the protector of his family and was well-respected in the community. Russell made many friends from near and far.
In his later years, Russell became a homebody where he spent time at home and had a love for playing cards. His favorite card game was Poker, where he talked a lot of "trash." He also loved to attend Bingo with his wife.
Russell leaves to cherish his loving memories, his wife, Lemetria Smith of Saginaw, Michigan; three sons, Russell Smith (Paulette), Macio Nickelberry (Dana), and Detrick Traylor; seven daughters, Sandra Hunter, Robin McClain, Ellea Johnson (Anthony), Roslyn Adkins, Rhonda Davis (Arbey), Stacy Ivey (Kenneth), and Latrice Traylor; three stepsons, Michael Brooks, Douglas Brooks, and Dana Moten; forty-two grandchildren, fifty-seven great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Namon Smith (Burnell), and Elonzo Smith; three sisters, Judy Smith, Anita Holmes (Lonnie), Theresa Smith, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Russell had one son, Darwin Glen Smith, two sisters, Betty Smith and Betsy Kate King, and one brother who preceded him in death.
I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course, I kept the faith: Henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day; and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
