Robert D.
Hollis, III
August 18, 1950 – April 8, 2026
Robert D. Hollis III, affectionately known as “RD,” passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at the age of 75. Born on Friday, August 18, 1950, in Pontiac, Michigan, RD was the beloved son of Robert and Elinor Hollis and grew up in Muskegon, Michigan, where he built the strong foundation of character, discipline, and hard work that would define his life.
RD attended Muskegon High School, where he was a proud and dedicated student-athlete, excelling in football, baseball, and track. His passion for teamwork and mentorship began early and remained a constant throughout his life. Following high school, RD answered the call to serve his country as a Vietnam War veteran, demonstrating courage and commitment to something greater than himself. After serving, he attended Michigan State University.
RD became known as Robert, Bob, Hollis and “Steady” in the Lansing area. He went on to build a remarkable career spanning more than 30 years with Michigan Bell, Ameritech, and AT&T, where he was known for his work ethic, loyalty, and professionalism.
He had a deep love for life and a wide range of passions. He was a die-hard Michigan State Spartan fan and could often be found enthusiastically “coaching” the Detroit Lions from his favorite chair every Sunday. He enjoyed music, hunting, fishing, bowling, billiards, golf, and in his later years, developed a passion for motorcycles, often embracing the open road on sunny days. Marley, his dog, was his dedicated companion.
While RD had many talents and interests, his greatest legacy was his unwavering commitment to mentoring and coaching young people in the Lansing community for over four decades. Whether on the field or off, he dedicated himself to shaping lives, instilling discipline, confidence, and character in generations of youth. His strength, wisdom, and thoughtful leadership touched countless lives. He leaves behind a legacy of coaching and teaching that will endure for generations. Above all, RD’s greatest joy was his family, and he treasured every opportunity to bring them together at reunions and sing with his sisters.
RD was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Donald Robinson, nieces Deonna and Shantina, and his beloved grandson, Robbie.
RD is survived by his devoted wife Deborah Hollis and sons Robert D. Hollis IV (Jennifer) and Kevin D. Hollis (KaSheena). He was a loving and cherished grandfather to Robbie, Devon, Jalynn, Kevin Jr., Aleah, and Kaden, taking immense pride and joy in each of their lives.
He is also survived by his sisters Patricia Hollis, Sharon Hollis, Emily Marks (Ronnie), Loretta Robinson, Deborah Scott (Sidney) and Lucille Williams (John), his special brothers Larry Allen, Charles Guy, Londari Hughes, and Tyrone Hughes along with many nieces and nephews who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
RD has gone home to his Lord and Savior, and while he will be deeply missed, his spirit will live on in all who knew and loved him.
