Mr. Onious “Pony” Matthews Jr. of Saginaw, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 28, 2025, at the age of 82, at Henry Ford Hospital. Onious was born on May 24, 1943, in Osceola, AR, the son of Onious Matthews Sr. and Shirt Etta Kelly.
Onious lived a long and fulfilling life, marked not only by his strong work ethic but also by the many milestones, achievements, and awards that celebrated his commitment and contributions. He loved spending time with family and friends and expressed his gratitude for his long life. Onious also enjoyed bowling and talking on the CB radio. As an avid bowler, Onious was proud of his five 300 games. With bowling and talking on the CB radio, Onious was able to develop many lifelong relationships that he cherished. Onious retired from Saginaw Malleable Iron in 1984.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Ada Faye Matthews, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage. Onious swept Ada off her feet in Osceola, Arkansas, eventually bringing her to Saginaw, where they raised their two children together. Ada was dedicated to caring for Onious until the end.
He is survived by his five children, who will carry on his memory: Anthony (Angela) Matthews of Watertown, NY; Sharon (Marvell) Eggleston of Detroit, MI; Connie Matthews; Meshell (Benjamin) Mathis; and Melvin Morris, all of Saginaw, MI. He also helped raise three grandchildren: Asheley (Carlos) McMath, Dwight Hargrove Jr., and Onious Hargrove. In addition, he leaves behind a host of other grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, brothers and sisters, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other relatives and friends.
Onious was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two brothers, four brothers-in-law, and other relatives and friends.
