Mercedes Ann LaPine was born on December 10, 1931, on Mackinac Island, Michigan, to William John LaPine and Lauretta C. McCarthy.
Affectionately known as "Mom" by those closest to her, she was a woman of strong faith, determination, and a deep desire to help others. Mercedes had (5) children, (11) grandchildren, (15) great grandchildren, (8) great great grandchildren and (1) GGG grandchild.
Mercedes was baptized at St. Anne's Catholic Church on Mackinac Island, a special connection to both her faith and the island where her life began. She earned a bachelor's degree in naturopathic medicine and devoted much of her life to studying, practicing, and teaching alternative and natural approaches to health and wellness. Mom was especially passionate about helping individuals facing cancer and shared her knowledge and experiences with many people throughout her life.
In 2006, Mercedes A. LaPine, ND, published Alive at 75: Cancer Free, a book reflecting her personal experiences and her dedication to natural and alternative medicine. She took great pride in her work and in the people she believed she had helped along the way.
Mom had a tender heart for animals and found so much joy in their companionship throughout her life. In her younger years, she raised AKC Collies and show dogs, and later her beloved cats held an especially dear place in her heart. Her love extended far beyond her animals-Mom cared deeply for her family and friends. Guided by a strong and enduring faith, she prayed for those she loved every day, always keeping them close to her heart.
Mom will be remembered for her strong faith, her love of family and animals, her independent spirit, and her passion for helping others. She was also deeply proud of her Native American heritage and her connection to the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, a heritage that remained an important part of who she was throughout her life.
She leaves to cherish her memory children, Connie Mary Linke of Alpena, Michigan, Steven Blair Kopacki of Traverse City, Michigan, Karen Michelle Kopacki, Laurie Catherine Frey, and Marcia Lisa Lamparten; grandchildren, Nicholus Kopacki, Karra Goddarci, Timmy, Chris, Bryan, Arron, Keith, Jessica, Jeffery, Erika, Zach, and Robin; great grandchildren; great great grandchildren; great great great grandchild; and sister, Charmine Jonet Weston.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Green.
Mercedes' "Celebration of Life" will be held in the spring of 2027 on Mackinac Island with a mass at St. Anne's and the "Celebration of Life" at the Catholic cemetery where Mom will be laid to rest.
