Although we feel a profound sadness with the loss of Ms. Leslie Harris Comer, affectionately known as "Cookie", there is joy in knowing that she gained eternal life through her faith in Christ. Leslie passed away on March 24th, 2025, at the age of 66. She was a cherished mother, beloved grandmother, sister, niece, friend, and a source of light and love to all who knew her.
Born on July 10th, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Austin and Shirley Harris. Cookie's earlier education was in Chicago public schools, and later she moved to Saginaw, MI, where she received her diploma from Saginaw High School. She worked as a lunch aide at Longfellow Elementary School and later as a dietary aide at HCR Manor, dedicating herself to helping others until she fell ill. Known for speaking her mind unapologetically, she was a kind, thoughtful, and caring individual who left an indelible mark on those around her.
Cookie found joy in spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved playing bingo, card games, and the lottery (where she often won), as well as shopping for new clothes and jewelry to always look her best. Cookie enjoyed participating in activities with her friends from the Carrollton Village Community. Earlier in life, she lived life on her own terms, but after finding salvation, she lived life on God’s terms, inspiring all who knew her. Cookie was a faithful member of New Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her four children: Maurice Harris, John Jackson, Shirley (Kevin) Jones, and Dana Harris; 24 grandchildren, Sharondra, Maurice, Brenden, Jordan, Jon’tee, Felexia, J’veon, Jaylen, Felecia, Jania, Jon’asia, Dana Jr., Da’Shaun, De’Asia, Dae’Veon, Dayion, MyAngel, Marshay, D’Terryion, Brooklyn, Jon’Tasia, Maurice Jr., and Ryadin; 12 great-grandchildren, with special closeness to De’Khiyah; siblings, Pamela Harris, Stephanie (Dennis) Poole, Barbara (Sidney) Addison, Kimberly (Geff) Price, and Mark Harris; two aunts, Lorraine McKinny (affectionately called mama) and Ollie Johnson; one uncle, Samuel Alexander; a host of nephews and nieces with closeness to Deanna Walton and Tamar Heart; two special cousins, Elbert McKinny and Rochelle Crumpton; and dear friends John Jackson Sr., Debbie Jackson, Valerie Hill, and Elly Mondeau.
Cookie was preceded in death by her parents, Austin and Shirley Harris; her brother Austin Harris Jr.; sister, Luceia (Randy) Walker; grandparents Lucille Alexander, John L. Long, Frank and Annie Harris, uncles, Henry Alexander, John L. Long, and Ivory Alexander; aunt, Henrietta (Penny) Stark; and nephew, Christopher Brandon Harris.
Cookie will forever remain in our hearts and be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.
