Kathleen Griffin-Ruiz (Lansing)

Kathleen Marie Griffin-Ruiz, known as “Kathy,” to many, age 64 years, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan, surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Born on Saturday, June 18, 1960, in Denver, Colorado, the daughter of Dr. Richard and Grace Griffin.

Kathy lived a life marked by resilience, joy, and deep devotion to her family. Kathleen found joy in life’s simple pleasures. Following her graduation from East Lansing High School, she attended cosmetology school and worked at Regis Hair Salon for many years. When she was no longer doing hair, she loved being outdoors. Camping under the stars and boating across calm waters– sometimes turning the calm waters into chaos on a jet ski or riding on a tube with her children and grandchildren trying to throw each other off. Sunbathing brought her peace and warmth; dancing and singing filled her days with rhythm and laughter. She had a keen eye for hidden treasures at thrift stores and garage sales– a pastime that reflected both her creativity and resourcefulness. Above all else, she treasured more than anything her time spent with her grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Kathleen faced personal challenges with mental illness and alcohol addiction. Her journey was not without hardship, but it was also one of strength and perseverance. Those who knew her will remember not only the struggles she endured but also the love she gave freely and the light she brought into their lives.

Kathleen was the wife of Jose Ruiz and the proud mother of five children: Courtney, Brooke, Jose II, Kristofer, and Antonio. Her love extended even further to her cherished grandchildren– A’Maya, Isaiah, Da’Vion, Ricco Jr, Xavier, Jose III, Chino, Rodney Jr, Giovanni, Mahlani, Liam, and Carlito– each of whom brought her immense pride and happiness. She also leaves behind her brother, Richard Griffin Jr, who shared in many of her life’s memories.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Grace Griffin who will welcome her home alongside her best friend, Lena Ruiz who has been waiting 24 years for her– along with others who have departed us too soon.
