Johnny Martin, Jr.

Johnny Lee Martin Jr., affectionately known as “Jay R.,” passed away at the age of 39. Born on May 18, 1987, in Saginaw, Michigan. Jay R. was the son of Johnny L. Martin Sr. and the late Felecia Johnson-Martin.

Jay R. was a proud graduate of Saginaw High School and continued his education at Delta College, where he earned an associate degree, before receiving a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Ferris State University.

Jay R. lived life with confidence, passion, and a personality that left a lasting impression on everyone around him. He loved music and had a special passion for playing the saxophone. Whether he was listening to his favorite songs or sharing music with others, it was one of the many things that brought him joy.

Jay R was known for his sense of style. He loved to dress well, stay fresh, and carry himself with confidence. He was a talented cook who enjoyed preparing meals and bringing family and friends together around good food and good conversation. Jay R. also enjoyed working out and staying fit. More than anything, Jay R. loved his family. He cherished spending time with those he loved, making memories through laughter and friendly competition.

Jay R. especially enjoyed competing with his big brother, Robert (and everybody else). Their relationship was filled with love, rivalry, and countless debates. Jay R. was never one to back down from an argument and was convinced he was right no matter the topic. If he believed something, he stood on it. While his stubbornness often led to spirited discussions, it was also one of the many qualities that made him unforgettable.

Everybody who knew Jay R. will remember his smirk, his wit (smart mouth), his loyalty, and his spirit. Jay R. loved hard, spoke his mind, and never backed down from a challenge or confrontation. He had a way of making his presence known, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who loved him.

Jay R. leaves to cherish his memory his father, Johnny L. Martin Sr.; his sisters, Astin Martin and Nia Martin; his brothers, Robert Johnson and Dominic Johnson; his nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and a host of cousins and extended family members. He also leaves behind special friends and loved ones who held a special place in his heart, including Cher-Ron Thomas, Reginald Johnson Jr., Marcus Johnson, Keshia Pratt, La’Shawn Johnson, Barbara Jackson, Tyreel Gilmore and Janei Greer, along with many other relatives and friends who will forever treasure the memories they shared with him.

Jay R. was preceded in death by his mother, Felecia Johnson-Martin; his sister, Chermese Gibbs; his grandparents, Mose Martin, Irene Martin, Leoda Johnson, and Gladys Johnson.

To his family, he was more than a son, brother, uncle, cousin, or friend. He was Jay R.—a man who lived loudly, loved deeply, debated fiercely, dressed sharply, cooked proudly, and left an impression that will never be forgotten.

Though his time with us was far too short, the memories he created, the laughter he shared, the music he loved, and the love he gave to his family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
