JoEllen Cockrum, 73, of Lansing, Michigan passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026. She was born on Tuesday, April 21, 1953, in Garden City, Michigan. She lived and grew up in Novi, Michigan until 1969. She later moved to St. Johns, Michigan where she raised her family.
JoEllen truly was the life of the party and always had a smile on her face. She was a strong, caring and dominant woman. She was a down-to-earth person who always cared about everyone. She was full of laughter, energy, love, a sense of humor and presence that drew people in. She carried that spark throughout her life, always finding herself at the center of attention in the best way.
Her favorite things to do throughout her life were going to bingo night with her mother and sister, sewing, cooking, and spending time with her family. Listening to music and being up to date with the greatest hits was one of her special gifts. She loved her music and that is one of the things that kept her going.
JoEllen was a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She loved deeply and wholeheartedly, especially to her daughter and three grandchildren who were the greatest joy of her life. She opened her door with love and comfort to everyone, and everyone knew they were welcome to visit at any time. You always would leave with a full belly. She was not just a grandmother, but a mother figure as well. JoEllen was the definition of a grandma, she was everyone’s Grrr.
JoEllen will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her beautiful soul. She leaves behind a loving legacy that will be carried on by her grandchildren.
She is survived by her grandson, Cody Smith; granddaughter, Phranquie “Frankie” Smith; sister, Julie (Karl) Tenlen; nieces, Marie Lynn (Troy) Wieland, Taylor (Mitch) Fabus and Shelby Beam; nephew, Jesse Cockrum. She is also survived by eight great nieces, four great nephews, many cousins, other relatives and friends.
JoEllen was preceded in death by her daughter, Beth Smith; her youngest grandson, Malik Yazid; parents, John and Elma Cockrum; and brother, Gary Cockrum.
The family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude for the prayers, support, kindness and love shown during this difficult time. Your thoughtfulness means more than words can express.
