Mr. Jeverson Kaple Kelley, affectionately known as Kaple, passed away in Lansing, Michigan, at the age of 81. He was born on February 18, 1944, in Wabbaseka, Arkansas, to the late Mathie Kelley and the late Lemon Kelley Sr. In 1950, the family moved to Jackson, Michigan, in search of a better life. As a young man, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at Second Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson, MI. Kaple along with his wife and daughter moved to Lansing Michigan in 1982.

Kaple graduated from Jackson High School, Class of 1962. He went on to earn two associate degrees from Jackson Community College (now Jackson College). His educational journey continued at the Illinois Institute of Technology (ITT) in Chicago, where he studied mechanical engineering. After two years, he returned to Michigan and enrolled at Western Michigan University to continue his studies in engineering. He also attended Lansing Community College. Kaple had a lifelong thirst for knowledge and curiosity about the world around him. Friends and family often referred to him as their “little Einstein” for his methodical way of thinking and strong work ethic. He was known for his intelligence, determination, and spirited opinions.

Kaple built an impressive career, combining more than thirty years of service at Clark Equipment, Wyman Gordon, and General Motors Corporation. His roles included assembler, machinist, quality control specialist, engineer and he eventually advanced into supervisory positions. His work record was impeccable and reflected his dedication and professionalism.

A proud U.S. Army veteran, Kaple honorably served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a medical evacuation specialist. He was also a 33rd Degree Prince Hall Freemason, Commander of the American Legion Sauk Trail Post #346, and a proud retiree of UAW Local 652.

Beyond his career and service, Kaple was an energetic outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting, both locally and in Canada. He was a golfer and belonged to the Jackson Amateur Golf Group. He enjoyed attending his beloved grandson’s sporting activities which included soccer, track, bowling, basketball and football. He enjoyed playing a good game of cards and chess. He was an avid University of Michigan football fan. It was a fulfilling experience to have the opportunity to mentor and tutor his extended family.

Above all, Kaple was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His family was his greatest joy. He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife of 56 years Wilma Kelley; daughter, Kellyce Kelley; grandson, Amari (Talia) Kelley; great-granddaughter, Kennedy Kelley; brother, James (Cynthia) Kelley; brothers-in-law, Benjamin VanDyke and Cecil VanDyke; sister-in-law, Rochelle VanDyke, goddaughter, Robyne Muray; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
