With hearts full of sorrow and love, we celebrate the life of JaQius N. Cox, affectionately known as Bugg, who departed this earthly life on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at the age of 28 years old. JaQius was born in Lansing, Michigan, at St. Lawrence Hospital, to Valeria Hutchinson and Nelson Cox, on Wednesday, February 5, 1997. From the very beginning, he carried a joyful spirit and a light that brightened every room he entered.
At an early age, JaQius accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was raised in the Baptist faith and often attended Lansing Church of God in Christ with his beloved aunt, Fannie Hutchinson. His relationship with God was personal and sincere, evident in the way he loved and served others. JaQius was educated in the Lansing School District and attended Everett High School. Gifted and curious, he was exceptionally computer-savvy, and his creative soul found expression through rapping, making music, and dancing. His hobbies were more than just pastimes—they were reflections of his energy, passion, and purpose. To know JaQius was to love him. His heart of gold and selfless nature made him a protector and friend to all. He always wore a big smile, greeted strangers like family, and was willing to help anyone—no questions asked.
He was preceded in death his father, Nelson Cox; maternal grandparents, John Henderson and Mary Hutchinson; uncles, John Henderson Jr., Michael Hutchinson, Isaac Hutchinson, and Edward Swindle; and cousins, LeBron Blackmon, Alphonso Blackmon, Timothy Blackmon, Bonita Harris, and Zanetta Hutchinson.
He is lovingly remembered by his mother: Valeria Hutchinson and stepfather, James Smith;
sisters, Shenita Andrews and TaLarra Reed; brother, Ronald (Shekia) Morris; nieces, Ebrionne Andrews, Amaya Morris, Davoni Lewis, and Tahlia Ford; nephews, Ebraham Andrews Jr., Davari Lewis, Devon Lewis, and Adrian Gonzales; aunts, Treva Hutchinson, Debra Wise, Mattie (Darnell) Riley, and special aunt Rebecca Morris; uncles, William (Fannie) Hutchinson and Stanley (April) Hutchinson; favorite cousins, Quan Hutchinson, Jamarion Bradford, Quinton Ward, Michael Hill Jr., and Charma Tanner; numerous other cousins, many other relatives and friends, including best friend, Regan Jasper.
Though his time with us was cut short, JaQius’s impact is eternal. He lived with purpose, gave with his whole heart, and loved deeply. His laughter, generosity, and presence will be missed beyond words—but his memory will forever live on in all of us.
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions…”— John 14:1–2
