Deacon James Rush York

Deacon James Rush York was born on July 1, 1950, in White Plains, New York, to Bernice Collins. At an early age, he was lovingly adopted and raised by his great-uncle and aunt, Rush and Annie York, whose guidance and care helped shape the man he would become.

On June 10, 2026, at the age of 75, Deacon James Rush York peacefully departed this life, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, love, and devotion to God, family, church, and community.

James was educated in the public schools of Tuskegee, Alabama, and graduated from Tuskegee High School. He continued his education at Tuskegee University before answering the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. He served honorably and received an honorable discharge.

On April 29, 1999, James married the love of his life, Shirley Jean York. Together, they built a life centered on faith, love, and commitment, sharing many cherished years together and creating lasting memories through fellowship, travel, and service to others. Recently, they celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary, a testament to their enduring love and dedication to one another.

A devoted family man, James leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Shirley Jean York; his son, Lenise Crisler of Saginaw, Michigan, and daughters, Daveda Crisler of Detroit, Michigan, and, Sabrena Presley; his sister, Annie Field; his brother, Kenny Mason (Lori); his nephews, Mark, Eric, and Donald; a host of beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many extended family members and friends.

James was a faithful and dedicated member of New Life Baptist Ministries, where he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board for more than 25 years. His ministry extended far beyond that role. He faithfully served as Director of the 12-Step Bible-Based Recovery Program, Sunday School teacher for the Life Development Classes, and liaison for numerous church ministries. He was known as a servant leader whose heart was always focused on helping others and strengthening the church family.

In recognition of his faithful service and commitment, James was honored by the New Life Baptist Ministries family and the community it serves for 15 years of dedicated service. This recognition was especially meaningful to him and reflected the lasting impact he made through his leadership, compassion, and unwavering dedication.

Beyond his church service, James devoted more than 20 years to Restoration Community Outreach as a Case Manager, continuing to serve others until declining health prevented him from doing so. He also dedicated 10 years of service with the Saginaw Division. Throughout his life, he was respected for his integrity, wisdom, and willingness to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

James found great joy in fishing, spending time with family, and vacationing with his beloved wife. Whether at church, at work, or in the community, he touched countless lives through his kindness, encouragement, and genuine concern for others.

Among those who held a special place in his life were his cherished friends Thomas Davis, Bennie Falls, Deacon Doug Carter, Michael Booker, and Steve Brewer. Their friendship, fellowship, and shared experiences enriched his life and brought him great joy throughout the years.

James was preceded in death by his son, Pierre LaSey Perkins; his sisters, Barbara Moore (Carl) and Juanita Norman (Jimmy).

The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Brother Ivory Stanton and Annie Stanton, Sister Thelma McWright, Becky Zieman, and Sister Relinda Bradley. James and Shirley were deeply grateful for your prayers, love, encouragement, and countless acts of kindness. Your presence and steadfast friendship were a source of comfort, strength, and blessing that will always be remembered.

Deacon James Rush York lived a life of faith, service, and love. His legacy will continue through the family he cherished, the church he faithfully served, and the many lives he touched along the way. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
