The Seasons of a Faithful Servant

Life is made up of seasons. There are seasons of planting and harvest, seasons of laughter and tears, seasons of labor and rest. Through every season, God faithfully guided the life of Mr. James Lee Murdock, who answered every call with unwavering faith, humble service, steadfast love, and a generous heart.

On Sunday, July 26, 2026, James Lee Murdock peacefully transitioned from labor to eternal rest at Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw, Michigan. His earthly journey began on September 5, 1944, in Landis, North Carolina, where he was born to the late Robert Lee and Elsie Murdock.

James graduated from Aggrey Memorial High School, Class of 1963, before entering a season of honorable service to his country. He enlisted in the United States Army, courageously serving during the Vietnam War. His commitment to duty, sacrifice, and patriotism earned him an honorable discharge, reflecting the character and integrity that would define every chapter of his life.

As God opened a new season, James made his home in Saginaw, Michigan, where he continued building a life rooted in hard work and service. He faithfully served as an employee of the General Motors Powertrain Division for twenty-five years before retiring in December 1996. Whether on the job, in his neighborhood, or among family and friends, James believed that serving others was not merely an act—it was a lifestyle.

His greatest devotion, however, was reserved for the Lord. James loved God with all his heart and faithfully demonstrated his faith through action. For more than twenty years, he was a devoted member of Greater Solid Rock Baptist Church, where he faithfully served on the Trustee Ministry and willingly assisted wherever his hands were needed under the leadership of Pastor Ernest L. Reed. He understood that true greatness is found in serving others, and his quiet humility, dependability, and servant’s heart became hallmarks of his Christian Walk.

Family was one of God’s greatest blessings in James’ life. He shared fifty beautiful years of marriage with his devoted and loving wife, Helen Marie Murdock, building a home founded on love, faith, commitment, and sacrifice. He cherished his children and found immense joy in watching his family grow through each generation.

James was also known as a generous giver who never hesitated to help someone in need. He also carried himself with dignity and excellence. James believed in looking his best and was admired for his impeccable sense of style. Whether dressed for Sunday worship, a family gathering, or an ordinary day, he was known for his sharp attire, polished appearance, and quiet confidence. He understood that how he presented himself reflected the respect he had for God, himself, and others.

James leaves to forever cherish his precious memory his devoted wife of fifty years, Helen Marie Murdock; his beloved children, Rosemary (Reginald) Rutledge, Pastor Lafayette Simpson, Tammy Brown, Tanja (Reginald) Price, and Pastor Taurus (Co-Pastor Darlene) Simpson; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he dearly loved; his sisters, Bettye Thompson and Angela (Rodrick) Smith; his brother, Ricky (Gwendolyn) Murdock; along with a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, sisters-in-law, godchildren, extended family members, and cherished friends whose lives were forever enriched by his love.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Robert Lee and Elsie Murdock; his brothers, Frankie Murdock, Hurbert Murdock, and Lovester Randy Murdock; his daughter-in-law, Lady Janice Simpson; and his son-in-law, Melvin Smothers.

The Murdock family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who faithfully walked alongside James during the changing seasons of his life. They offer special thanks to his devoted granddaughter, Tanara Simpson; Barbara Conner; the compassionate medical professionals who lovingly cared for him throughout the years; and the dedicated staff of the Aleda E. Lutz Department of Veterans Affairs for their exceptional care, kindness, and unwavering support.

As the Apostle Paul declared in 2 Timothy 4:7 (KJV): 

“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.”

James fought faithfully. He served honorably. He loved deeply. He gave generously. And having completed every season God ordained for his life, he now rests peacefully in the everlasting presence of his Lord and Savior, where the seasons never end and joy is eternal.
