Ivor was born to William Henry and Ruby Cordwell on June 30, 1935, in Georgetown, Guyana. He passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Covenant HealthCare Cooper in Saginaw, Michigan. Age 90 years.
Ivor shared twelve siblings, the eldest of whom was the late Lurline Brummell of Saginaw, Michigan. His early years were spent with his paternal grandmother, Elizabeth Henry, and her sister, whom we called Aunt, at Adventure, Essequibo Coast, Guyana. He attended Suddie Anglican School to the full curriculum and left at Certificate Level. Ivor and many relatives including Lynne, Osreene, Lennox and Marillyn Benn, migrated to Saginaw. Around the age of 14 years, Ivor returned to Guyana after Aunt died and his Granny took sick.
Ivor was engaged in various occupations. First with his dad, William, who was a carpenter contractor. He worked as a small ship sailor and was a school supplies distribution clerk with the Ministry of Education. However, it was his employment with the Shipping Association of Georgetown that he excelled to leadership positions in the Trade Union Branch associated with the Shipping Association. Ivor was introduced to Doric Lodge # 15 Order of Mechanics, and was initiated into membership by his younger brother, Byron, who was the sitting Worshipful Master. He loved and lived the principles of Mechanism.
Ivor was married in 1979 to Dorothy (Patsy) Lim of Demerara River, Guyana. Together, they worked hard and built a home at North Ruimveldt, Greater Georgetown, Guyana. They migrated to Saginaw in 1990 to join the Brummell Clan. They both worked in the hospitality industry around greater Saginaw until their retirement and Dorothy’s ascension to the heavenly realms.
Ivor is remembered as a kind soul, a devoted husband, a lover of good Caribbean music, and a dedicated Christian follower of Christ.
Ivor has ascended to be with his Heavenly Father but his memory lives in the hearts of his brother, Byron and his wife Juliana; his baby sister, Yvonne Chalmers and her husband Carlton; many, many, nephews, nieces, cousins, and other relatives in Saginaw, Ohio, Boston, Massachusetts, Texas, Brampton, Ontario, Canada, Brooklyn, New York, and in Queens, New York, and in Guyana along with his fraternal brothers in Guyana and abroad.
Members of our family would like to express sincere thanks to all those who played significant roles in the care, support, and administration of Ivor’s affairs. These include but are not limited to Lynne Presley and her husband Raymond, Edith, Pansy Murray, who was more than a nurse and who kept all members of Ivor’s family fully informed of all aspects of his health status and his care, Home Attendant, Lillie Oneal, Ivor’s friends at the community center at which he spent leisure time, Great Lakes Pace, and the medical staff at the hospitals who cared for him.
Rest peacefully, Ivor, in God’s Eternal Home.
