Mrs. Gladys Kelley peacefully transitioned on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan, at the remarkable age of 95. She was born on December 31, 1929, in Cusseta, Georgia, to her beloved parents, Gaines “Papa Candy” Jackson and Gracie “Mwah” Jackson.
Though a longtime resident of Lansing, Michigan, Gladys’s heart remained deeply rooted in her Southern heritage, being from Georgia. A proud graduate of Ratcliff High School, she later built a fulfilling career in the culinary arts, retiring from Michigan State University after many dedicated years of service.
A devoted member of Union Missionary Baptist Church, Gladys was honored to serve as a cherished Church Mother—offering guidance, grace, and love to her faith community.
Gladys was a mother and nurturer to many, known for her generous spirit and servant’s heart. She found joy in cooking, volunteering, bargain hunting, and—above all—loving her family. Her legacy is one of compassion, strength, and unwavering devotion.
Gladys leaves to cherish her memory, daughters, Brenda Kelley and Deborah Kelley Gray; grandchildren, Earl Fenoy Kelley, Falyn Kelley, Tambra Hinton, Ashley Kelley, David L. Gray, Chantone Brown, Kanika Brown, Gerald Lawrence, Michael Lawrence, and Telicia Kelley-Patrick; many beloved great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Mercier Jackson and Hubbard Jackson; as well as many other family members and beloved friends, including good friend, Juanita Thorton.
She is preceded in death by husband, Waymon Kelley, Sr.; sons, Waymon Kelley Jr. and Gerald Kelley; grandchildren, Antonio “Tony” Kelley, Aisha Gray, Nyrianca Kelley; 4 sisters; 7 brothers; and good friends, Doris Hanley and Maryland Langan.
