Dorties Thompson

Ms. Dorties Thompson passed away Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Covenant Harrison Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan. Age 78 years. Dorties was born on October 13, 1947, in Shelby, Mississippi, to Omatine Water and Silas Phelon.

Dorties Thompson “Granny” life story would make for a compelling book, as she left an incredible mark on the hearts of those around her. At a remarkably young age, she took on the responsibility of raising her siblings and her own children. A passionate cook, Granny found immense joy in preparing meals and feeding others, creating a warm atmosphere that her family and friends cherished.

Her love for her family was unwavering, especially for her children, as she supported them all through life’s ups and downs. Granny was famous for hosting family nights and ensuring everyone felt included, welcome, and loved during the holidays. She enjoyed playing cards, and “knock” was her favorite. The love and passion she shared will forever be etched in our hearts. It's also worth noting that Granny selflessly dedicated over 10 years to caring for children as a daycare and foster parent, until her health required her to adjust her priorities. While she could be straightforward in her words, her love and affection always shone through.

Dorties leaves to cherish her memory four sons, Edward Thompson, Herbert Thompson Jr., Leadelle Phelon, and Derrick (Keysa D) Thompson; three sisters, Albertine Brown, Elois Wright, and Jacquline Wright; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other special relatives and friends.

Dorties was preceded in death by her parents, Omatine Water and Silas Phelon, and stepfather; five brothers, Cliff, Frank, Jessie, Willie, and Leavelle Wright; one sister, Rosie Parker; one daughter, Sharon Thompson; and two sons, Timothy Phelon and Erick Thompson.
