Obituary

Beloved sister, aunt, cousin, friend, and godmother, Doris A. Dunbar, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the age of 77. She was born on October 18, 1948, to the late Burnice and Fraunetta Dunbar in Caruthersville, Missouri.

Doris was a long-time resident of Elkhart, Indiana, where she built many lasting friendships and meaningful relationships throughout the years. In 2025, she relocated to Saginaw, Michigan, to be closer to her brothers and family.

Throughout her working years, Doris served others in different ways. She worked as a physical education teacher and later as an insurance agent. In her younger years, she loved to run and remained active throughout much of her life.

Doris was a faithful member of Community Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in the Jail Ministry and sang in the choir until the time of her illness. Her faith was important to her, and she enjoyed sharing her knowledge of the Bible with others, especially through her work in the Jail Ministry.

Doris was loving, kind, independent, and someone who enjoyed life. She loved traveling, walking with her friends, getting massages, having her hair and nails done, going out to eat, and spending time with family and friends. She had a warm personality, enjoyed talking with people, and made friends easily.

Above all, Doris loved her family, her church, and the many people who became a part of her life. She was deeply loved, and her presence will truly be missed.

Doris’s memory will be cherished by her sisters, Rachel Sharp of Phoenix, Arizona; Joyce Stone and Mavis Stone of Hayti, Missouri; Cathy (Frank) Williams of St. Louis, Missouri; and Sophia Allen of Columbia, Missouri; her brothers, Artie Dunbar of Markham, Illinois; J.D., Howard, and Manuel Dunbar, all of Saginaw, Michigan; John Dunbar of Kansas City, Missouri; and David and Wayne Dunbar, both of Hayti, Missouri; her goddaughter, Andrea (Barry) Smith of Elkhart, Indiana; sister-in-love, Joann Pershay of Saginaw, Michigan; special friends, Bernadette Bulter, Pastor Clarence (Judie) Jones, Jackson Morgan, Pam Thomas, Cathie, and Anna; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family, and dear friends.

Doris was preceded in death by her sisters, Lillian and Velma; brothers, R.C., Tommy Lee, Michael, and Tommy; sisters-in-law, Rosie and Bonnie Mae; brother-in-law, Raymond, Alex; and nephews, Leonard, Maceo, and Dwight.

Doris leaves behind a lifetime of memories and relationships that will continue to be treasured by all who knew and loved her.
