Delois Smith "Lois"

December 14, 1949 — December 2, 2023

DeLois "Lois" Smith, a beacon of love and wisdom, peacefully departed this world on December 2, 2023, at the age of 73, in Marseilles, Illinois. Born on December 14, 1949, in Memphis, Tennessee to Willie Mae Johnson and Raymond Johnson. Lois was a cherished individual who touched the lives of many with her thoughtful nature and nurturing spirit.

Lois' journey began in the vibrant city of Memphis, but her story would start in 1956 when she came to Saginaw, MI. After graduating from Saginaw High School in 1967, she pursued her passion for helping others by studying nursing at Delta College. Her dedication and hard work culminated in a rewarding career as a Registered Nurse, where she provided compassionate care at Saginaw General Hospital for over 30 years until her retirement.

Family was the cornerstone of Lois' life. She is survived by her loving daughter, Shannon McDaniel (Veronica) of Normal, Illinois, and her son, Shawn R. Weaver Sr. of Saginaw, Michigan. Lois' legacy continued through her eight grandchildren; Antonia, Hannah, Aaliyah, and Shawn R. Weaver Jr. of Las Vegas, Nevada, Matthew J. White of Indianapolis, Indiana, DeMauriria "Mo" Pruitt of Normal, Illinois, Dai'Janae Hillie of Saginaw, Michigan, and Sami'Yah Sheldon of Atlanta, Georgia. She was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Ka'Loni Sheldon and Ja'Kaii Beard of Saginaw, Michigan, who brought her immense joy.

Lois' sisters, Betty Donald of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Barbara Haywood, Marilyn R. Johnson-Woodhouse, Shirley Johnson, and Tina Johnson, all of Saginaw, Michigan, will fondly remember her enduring love and guidance. Her nieces, Shalita Vining of Saginaw, Michigan, and Dr. LaMetria Johnson-Eaddy (Gregory) of Grand Rapids, Michigan; nephews, Dr. Eric Donald (Shatara) of Garden City, Michigan, Cedric Donald of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Jamario Love (Pamela) of Saginaw, Michigan; and special cousins, Mary Jean Ward and Sheria "Peaches" Dexter, will cherish the memories they shared with Lois. Lois also leaves behind special friends Kathleen Richardson and Gladys "Jumper" Craion, as well as a host of other family members, including great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Outside of her professional and family life, Lois was a faithful member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where she diligently served on the finance committee until her health began to decline. Her interests were a mirror to her personality: giving medical advice, enjoying her soap operas, talk shows, and watching her favorite Judges Judy and Mathis. Lois relished in family gatherings that were filled with laughter and the soulful sounds of her favorite blues songs.

Those who knew Lois would describe her as a loving soul, a fountain of wisdom, and a thoughtful presence in their lives. She had a profound impact on her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to be cared for by her in their time of need.

Lois was preceded in death by her mother Willie Mae Johnson, father Raymond Johnson, niece Alexis Johnson, brothers-in-law Sam Woodhouse, and Howard Lee Donald, and special friend Linda Lewis.

Lois's departure leaves a void in the hearts of those she loved, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire them. As we say goodbye to DeLois "Lois" Smith, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, compassion, and an abundance of love. Her memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories and lessons she shared, and the countless lives she touched with her kindness. May she rest in peace, knowing she has left an indelible mark on this world.
