In Loving Memory of Carl Edward McCray, Sr.

Our loving father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Carl Edward McCray, Sr., affectionately known as “Goose,” passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026. He was born on July 2, 1957, in Stephens, Arkansas. In 1972, he moved to Saginaw, Michigan, with his parents and siblings.

Carl was a kindhearted, generous, and dependable man who was deeply loved by his family and by those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was truly a man of his word. If Carl told you he was going to do something, you could count on him to do his very best to make it happen.

He was always willing to lend a helping hand. His kindness was genuine, his heart was giving, and he never hesitated to be there for the people he loved. Carl had a special way of making people feel welcomed and cared for. He brought joy and humor wherever he went. His generosity, loyalty, helpful nature, and love for others were just a few of the many qualities that made him so special.

Carl enjoyed fishing, cooking, shooting pool, watching basketball, listening to music, spending time with his family, and making people laugh. Music was also an important part of Carl’s life. He was a well-known jazz and blues musician who played in a band alongside his brothers. Playing music was something he truly enjoyed, and it allowed him to share his talent and love of music with others. Those who knew Carl will remember not only the music he played, but also the happiness and good times that surrounded him. Above all, Carl loved his family. Spending time with those closest to him brought him great joy, and the love he gave will continue to live on through the many lives he touched.

Carl leaves to cherish his memory his loving children, Carl McCray, Jr., LaTasha McCray-Heath (Harvey), Aapril Poole, Brandon McCray, and Katoya McCray; four stepchildren, 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind two brothers, Larry and Steve McCray; his sister-in-law, Alice McCray; his long-term partner, Joyice Green; and his special friend, Bernice Watley; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, James Otis McCray, Sr. and Fannie Mae McCray; brothers, J.D., J.C., Franklin, Clarence, James, and Billy McCray; sister, Clara McCray-Walker; and his wife, Rita McCray.

Carl’s absence will be deeply felt, but the love, laughter, music, generosity, and memories he gave to his family and friends will remain with them forever. He will be remembered as a man with a giving heart—a man who loved his family, kept his word, helped others whenever he could, and never needed to have much in order to give much.

Though he will be greatly missed, Carl’s legacy will continue through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, friends, and every person whose life was made a little better simply because they knew him.

Rest peacefully, Carl. Your love, laughter, music, and giving spirit will never be forgotten.
