Bruce Hicks, 69, of Lansing, Michigan, passed away on April 11, 2026. Born on March 9, 1957, in Lansing. He was the youngest son among twelve siblings. A cherished member of a large and loving family.
Bruce was the son of Robert and Carrie Hicks. His father, Robert, was a hardworking and respected City of Lansing employee, well known in the community for his integrity and dedication. His mother, Carrie, devoted her life to her faith, her church, and her family, diligently seeking Christ Jesus and leading by example. From them, Bruce inherited a strong foundation of service, perseverance, and love.
Deeply devoted to his family, Bruce shared a special bond with his mother. He delighted in making her smile, often spending long, quiet moments together that filled their home with her warm, infectious laughter. Surrounded by siblings and guided by steadfast values, Bruce grew into a man defined by loyalty, kindness, and resilience.
Committed to service, Bruce joined the United States Army, embracing the discipline and purpose of military life. His dedication to the country reflected the same loyalty he showed to his family and community.
Bruce’s life also bore the weight of profound challenge. He endured a wrongful conviction and spent more than four decades incarcerated. Through years od appeals, advocacy, and unceasing prayer, he held fast to hope. In a testament to faith and perseverance, Bruce was ultimately released from the Michigan Department of Corrections and reunited with his family in time to celebrate his mother’s 99th birthday. She later passed at the age of 100, having witnessed her son’s homecoming.
Those who knew Bruce remember his gentle spirit, quiet strength, and unwavering love for his family. He faced hardship without surrendering his humanity and his journey stands as a witness to endurance, faith, and the power of steadfast prayer.
Bruce is survived by grandchildren, Miracle, Destiny, Coressa, and Willie Jones; siblings, Bob (Linda) Dodd, Robert Lee Hicks, Terry & Donna Wray, Alice Glover, Beverly Hicks; many nieces, nephews, and other beloved ones.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Starr Summerville; parents, Robert and Carrie Hicks; siblings, Frederick Hicks, Jeffery (Dorothy) Hicks, Haywood Glover, Katie Roberts, Deloris White, Tennie Collie, Vivian (OC) Bowers; and other beloved relatives.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to charity, church, or organizations meaningful to Bruce. Also acts od kindness done in his memory are encouraged.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Paradise Funeral Chapel, the many friends, advocates, and prayer warriors who supposed Bruce throughout his life’s trials and triumphs. May Bruce’s memory be a blessing and an inspiration to all who knew him.
