Betty Sewell

Our dearly beloved wife, mother, and sister went home to be with our Heavenly Father on July 19th, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born on January 31, 1945, to the late Aretta Henton and Matthew Green Sr. in Cheneyville, Louisiana.

Betty was a member of Mt. Olive Institutional Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Marvin T. Smith, where she faithfully served as a Deaconess until her health began to decline. Although she could no longer physically attend church, she continued to fellowship virtually and regularly expressed her love for God and quoted His Word until He called her home.

Betty was employed by General Motors Corporation for nine years until she became visually impaired. After the loss of her sight, Betty found enjoyment in singing in church choirs, talking to her family and friends on the phone, and most importantly, spending time with her daughters. She was married to Johnnie Sewell Sr. in Louisiana in 1962. Through this union of 64 years, they were blessed with two daughters, Yolanda and Anita Sewell, and one son.

Betty leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband, Johnnie Sewell Sr. and one daughter, Anita Sewell; brother, Matthew (Sharon) Green, Saginaw, MI; sisters-in-law, Luella Johns, Gloria Williams, Martha (Kenny) Maise, and Diane Sewell, all of Saginaw, MI. and Amy (Willie) Pritchett of Montgomery, AL; half-sisters, Patricia Bell, Laura Green-Taylor, and Leslie Monday; godchildren, Christopher Moore, Aaron Foster; and Requetta Veal; special friends, Mrs. Shirley Bradley and Mrs. Beatrice Bender; and best friend, Lula Belvin. She also leaves a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, her special darlings, and her furry grandson, London.

Betty was preceded in death by a son lost in infancy, and a daughter, Yolanda Sewell; parents, Aretta and Matthew Green; siblings, Ruby (Raymond) Veal and Eula (Leo) Howard; father and mother-in-law, Johnnie Sewell Sr. and Luella Butler; brothers-in-law, Aaron and Michael Sewell Sr., and sister-in-law, Norva Ferguson.

The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation to Nurse Practitioner Winifred Angir-Sisco for her outstanding and compassionate care, and to the DaVita Dialysis team, who tended to her so diligently during her illness.

Betty was greatly loved and will be deeply missed.
