André P. Cunningham, Sr. (Lansing)

November 26, 1942 — January 3, 2023

Mr. André Pierre Cunningham departed this life on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at his home in Lansing, Michigan surrounded by his family. He was 80 years old. He is the son of Madeline Cunningham and the late Paul Cunningham, and was born on November 26, 1942, in River Rouge, Michigan.


André was a proud Vietnam Veteran of the United States Air Force serving in the 801st Combat Defense Squadron, where he received the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. He was honorably discharged.


André worked with his family’s construction company prior to joining the Ingham County Road Commission, where he retired after 25 years of service. He also had a home construction and renovation business, A&L Builders, with his former wife, LaDon Cunningham.


André was an avid runner, participating in races from Michigan to Georgia, often taking 1st place in his age group. He loved watching sports and supporting athletes in his family and in the local area. You might catch him at a local track meet, basketball game or football game. He enjoyed going fishing with his brothers. He loved to cook; was well known for his cabbage.


As an adult, André accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized under the leadership of the late Reverend Arcelius Flanagan. He practiced a life of prayer and reading God’s Word.


André leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Madeline Cunningham; children, two daughters, Angela Lunsford of Fort Worth, Texas, and Julia E. Cunningham of Tallahassee, Florida; four sons, Miguel (Tia) Cunningham of Snellville, Georgia, Maurice (Natasha) Woods of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Charles (Shonda) Smith of Atlanta, Georgia, and André (Constance) Cunningham II of Houston, Texas; one sister, Nancy Peterson; six brothers, Michael (Remy), Paul (Ann), Denny, Jeffrey (Edna), Zackary (Carol), and Juan; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; godson, Preston Watson; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.


He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Cunningham, and sister, Wilma Jean Davis Mull.
