S. Lynette Porter King (Lansing)

December 30, 1952 — October 29, 2021

Our Beloved, mother, grandmother, sister, auntie, and friend, Ms. S. Lynette Porter Houston King went home to be with the Lord on October 29, 2021, at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at the age of 68 years. She was born December 30, 1952, in Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Bennie S. Porter and Magnolia Bishop Porter.

Lynette resided in Lansing Michigan, where she attended Main Street Elementary School, West Junior High School, and was a graduate of J. W. Sexton High School. She received her Associate of Arts degree from Lansing Community College in Business Administration. God blessed Lynette with a beautiful singing voice, and she began singing at an early age in the Angel Choir, Youth Choir, and the Vocal Heirs of Trinity A.M.E. Church in Lansing, Michigan. Lynette was currently an active member of Greater St. Joseph Tabernacle Church in Detroit, Michigan where she served on the Mother’s Board and sang in the Choir. Lynette loved her family and church family and more importantly, she loved the Lord. She loved being in the house of the Lord, attending Bible study, and reading her Bible.

Lynette worked for the State of Michigan, Department of Treasury as a typist for 25 years where she met her husband, Vince Houston. Their union was blessed with two children, Kareen and Travas. Years passed and Lynette married her High School Sweetheart, Calvin Carter, Sr. She was then blessed with two bonus children, Calvin, Jr. and Kevin Carter.

Lynette was born with a love for animals from her dad, Bennie, who was truly a dog lover. Many times, she would take in stray dogs and nurse them back to health. Lynette probably missed her calling to become a veterinarian because her knowledge of dogs became one of her expertise.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, daughter, Kareen Houston; son, Travas Houston; 2 bonus sons, Calvin Carter, Jr. and Kevin (Danaina Bernard) Carter; grandchildren, Izarria (Jamarco) Love, Somiaya Houston, and Braylin Boyd; sisters, Reverend Kay Porter and Taralyn Reynolds; nieces, Juwairiah Cooper, and Tiana Reynolds; nephews, Miquel, Aadam and Jameel Cooper; many great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and is now reunited with them in Heaven.
