Ruby Lee Purnell (Lansing)

Mrs. Ruby Lee Purnell passed away Monday, August 2, 2021, peacefully in her home of many years, surrounded by her family. Age 87 years. She was born April 10, 1934, in Montgomery County, Winona, Mississippi, to parents, Earline and Foster Hobbs.

Ruby was a devoted mother, housewife, and hairstylist. She had a passion for cooking, many showed up to her door for a plate. Music, dancing, and gardening were among Ruby’s favorite things. She kept many plants around the house, including her “must have” collards. Ruby loved her sports, listening to gospel music, her sunrise golden hair, and indulging her passion for expensive perfumes. Many will remember Ruby sitting on her front porch sharing “news” with the neighbors, watching the comings and goings, and most importantly, being a mom to all the kids on the street. Ruby’s big smile and loving, upbeat personality will be remembered by all.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her pride and joy, her 8 children, Eddie (Robert) Allen, David Hobbs, Lady Patricia (Roy) Castro, Winfery Hobbs (Terry Feasel), Cartena (Greg) Duncan, Joe (Tammy) Hobbs, Michael (Kim) Hobbs, and Nakiswa Purnell; her 11 grandchildren, Aleatha, Tanieka, Lamiah, Carshonda, Parisenne, TeAnna, Tiare, Mikial, Anas, Ameena, and Maryum; 15 great-grandchildren, and several great, great-grandchildren.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Earline and Foster Hobbs; her sister, Julia Campbell; and ex-husband, David Purnell.
