Oscar Blackmon

June 5, 1929 — June 10, 2018

Oscar Blackmon was born June 5, 1929 in Union Springs, Alabama to Goins and Nettie Mae Blackmon. A young man seeking adventure and opportunity, he journeyed to Saginaw, Michigan at the age of eighteen. He found work with General Motors Corporation and worked diligently for twenty-five years before retiring. Oscar was a family man and a ladies’ man. He married Leola K. Johnson in 1951. They shared twenty-five years together before she passed away in 1976. Oscar later married Penny Brown in 1980, who also left this life before him. Though he lost two wives, he still continued to live. He loved socializing, visiting friends, and playing his lottery. He never missed an opportunity to play Bingo, another hobby he was most passionate about. Oscar loved to take long drives and just ride around town listening to the radio. He was an avid sports fan but baseball was his favorite sport. He often told the story of how great a baseball player he was and how he would have gone to the big leagues and played alongside Jackie Robinson but he had a family. Oscar was full of life and laughter. He never met a stranger and always made sure to help someone if he could. He touched many lives by giving advice or just being a listening ear. He had a strong personality with an equally large heart. Oscar will truly be missed by his family and friends.

God called Oscar home on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at the well-lived age of 89 years. He joined his parents, Goins and Nettie Mae Blackmon; three sons, Freddie Blackmon, Walton Bell, Oscar Blackmon, Jr; one daughter, Wavonne Marie Halbert; two brothers, Tommy and Alonzo Blackmon; two grandsons, Freddie and Frederick Young; one great-grandson, Marquavis Beamon; and the mothers of his children, Leola Blackmon, Fernanda Lopez, Sandy Dutcher and Penny Brown, who all preceded him in death.
