Odessa Surles

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Odessa Surles went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday, November 27, 2014 at Covenant Healthcare-Cooper. Age 82 years. Odessa was the 1st born of her siblings to Frank Sr. and Grace Miles on November 20, 1932 in Lowndes County, Alabama.
Ms. Surles was a faithful member and usher of Truevine Baptist Church currently under the leadership of Pastor Paul E. Broaddus for 60 years. She was employed at St. Marys of Michigan Medical Center as a supervisor of the Housekeeping Department. Odessa retired after 27 years of service. After retirement she worked for Covenant Healthcare and the Buena Vista School district until her health failed her in 2009. She loved children, had a wonderful smile and a great sense of humor. Odessa loved her family and she will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Doris Brown; two sons, Louis Surles Jr. and Timothy (Antinella) Surles; grandchildren, Hope Nash, Chasharra Brown, Tavorez (Deidra) Surles, Travelle (Nashika) Surles, Rasheda (Gregory) Patterson, Joseph Williams, Demetrius Kincaid, Thomas Surles, Akila Brown, Charvon Beedles, Mario Bables Sr. and Tiera Johnson; twenty-three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Frank (Louiza) Miles Jr., Charlie (Regina) Miles, Charles (Nellie) Miles and Percy Coleman; one brother-in-law, Uleslie (Lucille) Surles; two sisters-in-law, Dollie Mae Lawrence and Louise Ella Williams; a special group of sisters-in-law that were able to care for her, Pauline Lawrence, Jimmie Lee (Henderson) Foster, Lucy (Floyd) Wilson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her Truevine Baptist Church family.
Odessa was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Surles Sr., her parents, Frank Sr. and Grace Miles, brothers, James and Willie Miles, sisters-in-law, Carrie Miles, Annie Miles, Bernice Surles and Mae Eva Surles, brothers-in-law, George, William Jr. and Chester Surles Jr., son-in-law, Marvin Brown.
The family wishes to express special thanks to her godson, Raymond Bady Sr. and family, her special friends, Lottie and Gloria Harris, the staff nurses at A & D Home Healthcare: Yolanda Liles, Sharon Cummings, Cyrella Ball, Carolyn Bowens and Roz.
