Martha Young

August 2, 1922 — July 2, 2018

Martha Young was born August 8, 1922 in Waverly Hall, Georgia to Joe Taylor and Mattie Whitehead Johnson. She graduated from Spencer High School in Columbus, Georgia which was the first African-American high school in Columbus. She later moved to Saginaw, Michigan where she was a resident until her passing. Martha was a faithful member of Bethel AME Church for many years. She was employed by the Veteran’s Administration and was a dedicated employee for thirty years before retiring. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles, bingo and traveling. She loved to dress up and wear hats, along with White Diamonds perfume, her signature fragrance. Martha was a giver and helped anyone and everyone. She was selfless, always putting the needs of others before her own. A kind and caring woman is how she will be remembered. A wonderful mother and grandmother, she was blessed to see her family to the fifth generation. The epitome of a virtuous woman, Proverbs 31 describes her well. “Many daughters have done well, but you, Martha, have excelled them all.”

On Monday, July 2, 2018, Martha went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She joined her husband, Samuel J. Young; parents, Joe Taylor and Mattie Whitehead Johnson; stepfather, Jack Johnson; son-in-law, Charles Williams, Sr.; two grandchildren, Marvin Williams, Emery Young; and four great-grandchildren, who all preceded her in death.

She leaves to celebrate her life two daughters, Gwendolyn Williams, Jeanine Young; four sons, Larry Jackson, Keith Taylor, Mark Young, Roger (Juanita) Young; twenty-two grandchildren; fifty-four great-grandchildren; fourteen great-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends, including best friend of ninety years, Ruby Livingston.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Zemira Goodman, Nancy Williams, Kim Hardy, Pastor Dennis Laffoon and Bethel AME Church, Pastors Taurus and Darlene Simpson, Reverance Hospice, Saginaw Senior Care and Rehab and Ivan E. Phillips and the Staff of Paradise Funeral Chapel.
