Katie M. Jackson (Lansing)

Katie Mae Nelson was born Thursday, July 1, 1926, to parents Louis Ray and Martha Nelson of Wichita Falls, Texas. One of seven children, Katie grew up in Wichita Falls, attended public schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.

As part of the Great Migration, she relocated to Lansing in 1943. It wasn’t long before Katie caught the eye of the debonair Alldean Jackson. Jackson knew he had to make his move quickly and asked Katie to marry him. This union withstood joy, hard times, bountiful blessings, sadness, and the most amazing days for 66 years. Together Mr. and Mrs. Jackson raised eleven children and fostered many.

Seeking counsel from God, Katie was directed to the occupation of nursing. It was a place where Katie would flourish - dispensing love and kindness. Katie was employed by St. Lawrence and Sparrow Hospitals eventually retiring from Mary Avenue Nursing Home. Katie treated her patients with dignity, respect and unconditional love. Because of her kindheartedness and excellent care, Katie became a highly sought-after private care health aide.

Under the leadership of Bishop S.C. Coles, Katie united with Lansing Church of God in Christ where she was a dedicated, faithful member. She served on the Mother’s Board with a joyful attitude and a believing heart. She and Alldean lived a blessed life - reading and studying the bible, singing songs of praise, going to church, and making their home the epicenter of family love.

Katie was a praying woman – a God fearing, virtuous woman. She was affectionate, loving and a great listener without judgement and had a genuine love for everyone. She treated everyone as if they came for her womb. Katie, like Ruth in the bible, was a symbol of abiding loyalty, compassion, unfailing devotion, respect, grace, honesty, integrity, generosity, wholesomeness, honor, and kindness. A woman of vision who had unwavering faith.

Her children rise-up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her Proverbs 31:28: Family was everything to Katie. Her family knew her as Mom, Grandma or Katie. She made each member of her family feel treasured. She never forgot a birthday, school recital, graduation, Easter speech, or other special recognition. Katie could always be found in the audience smiling and telegraphing her love through the air.

Katie was an excellent cook, and her home was often the location of Sunday dinner for family, friends of family and friends of friends. No matter who stopped by, there was always enough, and no one went away hungry.

Katie let the beauty of God flow through her and was admired for her beautiful skin and flawless complexion. A fashionista, Ms. Katie loved her some bling-bling and was always dressed in style, never entering the doors of the church without a loving heart and classy hat matching her dress.

The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or other material things accumulated in ones’ life, but rather a legacy of character and faith. Mother Katie Mae Jackson was known for her strength and perseverance. She knew more struggles throughout her life than many of us will ever know. Her faith sustained her; she trusted in God, and He provided. She taught her family how to laugh and shared the joy of laughter every day. She readily offered her tender words of encouragement, compassion, wisdom, and praise.

Matthew 25:23: “His Lord said unto him, well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord”. Now it’s time to take your well-deserved rest. On Wednesday, September 29, 2021, in the still of the morning, surrounded by her precious family, at the age of 95, Katie Mae Nelson Jackson peacefully transitioned into the waiting arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Her memory and legacy will be forever cherished and kept alive by her devoted husband, Alldean Jackson; eight children: Jessie Nelson, Louis Earl “Joe” Hall, Stephen Lamar Hall, Denise Jackson, Gina (Sam) Jones; Monte Jackson; Brenda Kay (Lenardo) Battle; David Jackson. Brothers: Gregory Nelson and Kenneth Wayne Nelson; 30 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren, 60 great-great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-great grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

She was predeceased in her homegoing by her parents; three children: Donald Hall, Francia Hall Pond and Wilfred “Leon” Hall, Jr; four siblings, one granddaughter, and two great grandsons.
