Our beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend, Mr. Carey Bobby Owens, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 20, 2023, at the blessed age of 59. He was born on Sunday, March 22, 1964, in Savannah, Georgia, the son of Ruby Mae Miller Jackson and Carey Owens. He was the youngest of 6 maternal siblings. In addition, Carey had 5 paternal siblings.
Carey received his GED after relocating to Atlanta, Georgia. In 1987 Carey married Linda Williams. To this union, one son was born, Terance Tramel Owens of whom Carey was very proud. A Teen Challenge graduate, Carey came to Lansing, Michigan by way of Chicago, Illinois in 2010 to assist with the Teen Challenge Program in the area. In this capacity, he has held the positions of project coordinator, lead cook, musician, mentor, and teacher. In sharing his story and holding students in the program accountable, he has helped many men triumph in meeting their goal of leading successful, productive, non-dependent lives throughout the community and world. Carey had a heart to serve and a genuine love for people. He knew no strangers always pursuing ways to make sure people are doing okay, feeling comfortable and valued. He loved talking with people, especially his elders and the young people. Carey worked in the hotel and restaurant industry for over 30 years. He attended and completed culinary training at Hilton Head’s Culinary Institute in South Carolina. One of his greatest joys was cooking for people. He was a self-taught drum and keyboard player. Carey was a member of Rivers of Life Church in Holt, Michigan and had recently began attending Union Missionary Baptist Church in Lansing, Michigan. His hobbies included cooking, playing the drums and keyboard, writing and listening to music, roller skating, bowling, and he was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan!
