Bernice Elizabeth Mccarver (Lansing)

June 12, 1920 — June 16, 2015

Bernice Elizabeth (Holman) McCarver was born June 12, 1920 to Harry and Hazel Holman in Fort Wayne, Indiana and left her pain behind on the afternoon of Tuesday, June 16, 2015.
On June 16, 1940 she married Leon McCarver who moved her to Detroit to start a life there. To their union were seven children. Always a hard worker, she retired from Detroit Public Schools as a Teachers Aide at Peck Elementary. Her greatest job was Mama. Her joy was her children and a clean house. While working at Peck, Mama took night classes at Wayne County Community College where she earned her Associate Degree. In March of 1971, she realized her dream of home ownership with the purchase of a brand new home with a fenced in yard. As a mother, Mama always supported us in all of our dreams. She showed love without having to tell us she loved us. Mama was a great poet, out-spoken, smart, kind, understanding, loving, supportive and quick to laugh or smile. She always had a special place in her heart for children and the down trodden. She enjoyed reading romance novels and watching The Game Show Channel, especially Steve Harvey and The Family Feud. Even in her illness and age, she was still a flirt which would always cause a chuckle. In the last few years, she is known for her favorite songs; Feets Too Big, Im in Love With Amy, Old Faithful, Baby Face and Standing in the Need of Prayer. These songs helped her get through baths, IV insertions, blood tests, dialysis and many other things. She sang her way through. Standing only at almost five feet tall, she was the strongest person that I know and demanded the respect of a giant. She always had a song or something clever or comical to say. We eventually referred to her as the energizer bunny. Her strength and willpower to get through all of the hospital stays and illnesses is a testament to God.
She leaves to cherish her memory four children; Carolyn (Norman) Porter, Ronald McCarver, Jacqueline (Michael) Hazewood and Sharon (Randy) Jackson, 21 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and 35 great great grandchildren, sister Hester Melissa Murray and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
The family would like to thank Sparrow Home Hospice, St. Lawrence Dialysis staff, Sparrow Dialysis staff, Fresenius Dialysis staff, Dr. Kelley and Visiting Physicians, Sparrow staff, Capital Area Health and Rehabilitation staff, SPEC TRAN, JWR, Tri County Office on Aging and Pinnacle.
